France captain Antoine Dupont undergoes surgery for facial injury, return date uncertain

Posted : 23 September 2023
France's rugby captain, Antoine Dupont, has undergone surgery to address a facial injury he sustained during a match against Namibia in the Rugby World Cup. The injury occurred during a head-to-head collision with Namibia's captain, Johan Deysel, leading to Deysel receiving a red card after an initial yellow card.

The surgery took place on September 22nd at Toulouse's CHU Purpan, around 11 p.m. The French federation (FFR) announced that Dupont would return to the national team for a gradual sporting recovery under medical supervision in the coming days. However, no specific timeline for his return to the field was provided.

Despite the setback, Dupont expressed optimism and determination, stating, "Wounded but not sunk. Show must go on. Can't wait to return to the squad" on social media.

France, already without flyhalf Romain Ntamack due to injury at the World Cup, is set to face Italy on October 6th in a crucial match for the tournament hosts. The outcome of this game could determine their progress, unless Italy manages to defeat New Zealand on September 29th.

In the quarter-finals, France may potentially face top-ranked Ireland or defending champions South Africa, with matches scheduled for the weekend of October 14-15.

Antoine Dupont's absence against Italy presents coach Fabien Galthie with the choice between Baptiste Couilloud and Maxime Lucu to replace the 2021 World Player of the Year. It's worth noting that France has a strong track record with Dupont, winning 27 of 31 tests with him in the lineup and experiencing four losses out of 11 in his absence.
