France achieved their most successful Olympic performance in over a century by securing their 15th gold medal after retaining the men's volleyball title at the Paris Games on Friday. This victory contributed to an impressive total of 57 medals for the host nation.
The French team surpassed their previous record from the Atlanta Games in 1996, where they earned 37 medals, including 15 golds. Their prior best tally was at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, where they stood on the podium 43 times.
The only higher medal count in French Olympic history dates back to 1900 when France won 102 medals, including 27 golds. However, it’s worth noting that the 1900 Olympics featured only 26 competing nations, with some events exclusively involving French athletes.
