Four Tied for Lead After First Round of Boeing Classic

Posted : 10 August 2024

Woody Austin, Steven Alker, Robert Karlsson, and Gene Sauers all posted impressive 6-under-par 66s on Friday to share the lead after the first round of the Boeing Classic at The Club at Snoqualmie Ridge in Snoqualmie, Washington. Austin, who is aiming for his fifth victory on the Champions Tour, achieved his score with eight birdies, including two in the final three holes. Despite a three-putt on his opening hole, the 60-year-old veteran was pleased with his solid performance, noting that he avoided missing any fairways for what he believes is the first time in a while.

Alker, currently third in the tour standings, completed a bogey-free round highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 18th hole. At 53, Alker is pursuing his ninth career win on tour and could join a distinguished list of multi-time Champions winners with a victory this weekend. He praised the poa greens at Snoqualmie Ridge, which he finds ideal for his putting, emphasizing the importance of speed and accuracy to make putts.

Karlsson, 54, also had a strong showing with a bogey-free round featuring six birdies. Despite his consistent performance on the Champions Tour, he has yet to secure a win, having finished as a runner-up five times. Sauers, 61, made a notable surge with birdies on holes 14 through 16 but faltered with a bogey on the 18th. This round matched his lowest score of the year as he seeks his second career Champions Tour win, his first being the US Senior Open in 2016.

In the standings, Kirk Triplett, Michael Allen, and Australia’s David Bransdon are just one stroke behind, each carding a 67. Defending champion Stephen Ames had a challenging round, marked by bogeys on holes 11 and 17, as well as a double bogey on the 4th. The Canadian finished the day with a 1-under 71, placing him tied for 26th.
