Fleetwood, Lamprecht, Grillo lead at 151st Open with 66s

Posted : 21 July 2023
Tommy Fleetwood, Christo Lamprecht, and Emiliano Grillo took the lead after the first day of The 151st Open, each carding a five-under-par 66 at Royal Liverpool. Lamprecht, making his Open debut after winning The Amateur Championship at Hillside, showcased his skills and confidently secured the clubhouse lead with a remarkable round.

Joining Lamprecht at five-under was Fleetwood, who had his best opening round at The Open and is determined to win his first major and lift the Claret Jug. He picked up momentum on the back nine, recording four birdies.

Despite challenging conditions in the afternoon as the wind picked up, Grillo managed to finish with a sensational birdie putt to also reach five-under.

Other surprising names near the top of the leaderboard were Antoine Rozner of France and Spain's Adrian Otaegui, both shooting 67 and sitting one shot behind the leaders. Brian Harman later joined them with a solid performance, continuing his good form from last year when he finished T6.

However, the day wasn't as favorable for Rory McIlroy, coming off a victory at the Genesis Scottish Open, as he shot 71 with a round full of ups and downs. Reigning Champion Golfer Cameron Smith struggled to a one-over score, while world number one Scottie Scheffler fared better at one-under.

One of the standout performances came from Christo Lamprecht, who impressed with his Open debut. Playing alongside his mentor and hero Louis Oosthuizen, the giant South African started strong with three birdies in the first six holes. Despite a bogey on the 11th, Lamprecht recovered and finished with a brilliant chip-in on the 14th, securing his impressive 66.

Lamprecht credited Oosthuizen for his support, saying, "Having someone that I know very well and is a ginormous mentor for me... helped me feel a little bit more at home and at ease." Oosthuizen, a favorite player of Lamprecht while growing up, has been an inspiration and playing alongside him was a significant moment for the young golfer.
