Five-times Awa Ibraheem Junior Open Golf champions, Oyero, targets Tiger Woods' feat

As the dust continues to settle over the 10th Awa Ibraheem Junior Open Golf championship, one of the top emerging prodigies produced by the championship and a five-time winner says he idolizes American golf sensation, Tiger Woods.

Destiny Oyero, a record five-time winner of the Awa Ibraheem Junior Open Golf championships, stated in an exclusive interview on Wednesday that he believes in achieving what Woods has accomplished in the world of golf.

Oyero was one of the star attractions of the just-concluded Awa Ibraheem Junior Open Golf championships held at Ikeja Golf Club on Saturday night.

The 15-year-old Oyero, a silver medalist at the 2022 African Junior Championships, said he has a lot of time to prepare to become a star attraction in golf.

"I am happy to have won this championship for a record five times in my category. I think, for now, I don't have a serious challenger.

"I practice a lot because my dad used to encourage me, mainly because he is a golfer and wants the best for us in the sport.

"My training regime is a bit strict but enjoyable, and now, I enjoyed being on the field playing with my siblings who are also golfers.

"Golfing has exposed me to a lot of things, and I have visited some places. I have also had the opportunity to travel out of the country," he said.

Born into a family of golfers, Oyero, a Senior Secondary School 1 student of The Ivy College, Lagos, further stated that he idolizes the American great, Woods, and would like to follow his style of play.

"I watch Tiger Woods a lot and how he plays. I would like to be another Woods in Africa. I have been told that it is possible given my age.

"I participated in the Africa Golf Championship where Team Nigeria came second, and I am also looking forward to the next edition.

"I also participated in the last National Youth Games (NYG) in Asaba, but it was not a pleasant experience, as those I competed against are way older than me, but I had to play my own game.

"One day, I hope to play in the golf tour to finally achieve my dream of becoming a professional golfer," he said.
