Field Narrowed for 2024 FIVB Beach Volleyball U19 World Championship

Posted : 30 August 2024

The field for the 2024 FIVB Beach Volleyball U19 World Championship has been trimmed from 32 to 24 teams per gender following the pool play phase in Shangluo, China, which concluded on Thursday. The tournament advances to the knockout stages on Friday, featuring the Round of 24 and the Round of 16, followed by the quarterfinals and semifinals on Saturday. The final matches, including the medal contests, are scheduled for Sunday at the Qinling Museum Square.

Teams that topped their pools in the group stage earned a bye to the Round of 16. On the men's side, Hungary’s Bence Tari and Ákos Veress advanced directly after leading Pool C with a perfect record. They navigated through tough matches on Thursday, securing victories over Poland’s Marcel Wanat and Tomasz Warych and Brazil’s Juca Brandão and Gabriel Furquim. Tari highlighted their perseverance as a key factor in overcoming the challenges of the day.

Also bypassing the Round of 24 were several standout teams, including Tom Sonneville and Bram van Der Wel from the Netherlands in Pool A, Finland’s Veeti Viljamaa and Konsta Viljamaa in Pool B, and Latvia’s Matīss Šalkovskis and Karlis Jaundžeikars in Pool D. Other direct qualifiers included Iran’s AmirAli GhalehNovi and Habib AkbarzadehKashani, Italy’s Laurin Zoeschg and Matteo Lurisci, Poland’s Szymon Pietraszek and Jakub Krzeminski, and Mexico’s Antonio Lares and Carlos Herrera.

On the women’s side, Spain’s Sofía Izuzquiza and Marta Carro, USA’s Sally Perez and Sarah Wood, Canada’s Ofure Odigie and Calinda Kok, and USA’s Myriah Massey and Lily Davis led their respective pools to secure direct advancement. Notable performances included a thrilling match where Australia’s Jasmine Rayner and Cameron Zajer edged out Brazil’s Julhia Furtado and Marcela Barbosa in three sets. Rayner praised her team’s aggressive play and resilience in the face of Brazil's strong service pressure and smart offense.
