FedExCup Playoffs underway, with Jordan Spieth leading with a season-low round of 63
Posted : 11 August 2023
Despite two weeks off, Spieth felt right at home and found his groove. The 2015 FedExCup champion hasn't had the season he had hoped for, with missed cuts and top tens.
The quest for the FedExCup has officially commenced at the FedEx St. Jude Championship. With just 70 competitors teeing off today in Memphis, Tennessee, the stakes are high: a ticket to the upcoming BMW Championship and a place in next season's Signature Events hang in the balance.
A classic display of Jordan Spieth's skills marked the initiation of the FedExCup Playoffs, as the Texan masterfully carded a 63 to seize the first-round lead by a single stroke. Spieth's round was impeccable, tallying five birdies without a single bogey, culminating in a breathtaking approach shot on the 16th hole that demonstrated his signature brilliance.
Undoubtedly at ease in the humid Southern climate, Spieth showcased his rhythm despite a two-week hiatus. The recently-turned 30-year-old shared that he invested significant time in playing during his break.
"I tried to play a lot back at home just to shoot scores. I had kind of taken off playing a bunch, and I think that that helped a bit in the last couple weeks. Just tried to kind of get some competition. I felt like the more I'm playing at home and not having to work on a ton of stuff, the better it comes out to the course here," Spieth articulated following his remarkable round.
Spieth, the 2015 FedExCup champion, has encountered a season that deviated from his aspirations. His record comprises as many missed cuts as top-ten finishes (six), and he arrived in Memphis following missed cuts in two of his last three events. Despite his perceived solid play, the scores didn't reflect his competence.
"I just found that I wasn't playing a ton in that break between U.S. Open and (Genesis) Scottish Open, and so I just got to the Scottish, and I felt like things were good, but I just wasn't scoring, so it was pretty frustrating."
Although narrow misses at the RBC Heritage and the Valspar Championship, as well as a top-five finish at the Masters, propelled Spieth in the FedExCup standings, he concluded the Regular Season ranked 31st, narrowly outside the East Lake cutoff.
TPC Southwind proved to be the venue where Spieth unearthed the desired elements of his game, and maintaining his current form should easily secure his passage to Atlanta.
"I feel good," Spieth affirmed, "It didn't quite feel as tight ball-striking-wise, but then all of a sudden, I ended up hitting a good one on 15 and then chipping in on 16, so I think it was solid. I've been driving the ball really nicely and everything kind of goes from there. If I feel confident stepping into a driver, getting in front of some shots and hitting some nice ones, that normally feeds to the rest of the bag."
A triumph at the FedEx St. Jude Championship would mark Spieth's first victory since the RBC Heritage in 2022 and propel him to third in the standings, reigniting his pursuit of a second FedExCup.
