European Chess Club Cup and European Club Cup for women set new records in Albania

The 38th edition of the European Chess Club Cup and the 27th European Club Cup for Women commenced on October 1st in Durres, Albania. This year's event set a new participation record, with a total of 110 teams representing 34 European federations. Among these, 84 teams are competing in the Open section, while 26 teams are participating in the Women's competition. Notably, the tournament boasts a roster of 720 players, including 150 grandmasters and over 400 titled players, all representing their respective clubs.
The tournament format consists of 7 rounds played under the Swiss system, with a time control of 90 minutes for the first 40 moves, followed by 30 minutes for the rest of the game, with a 30-second increment per move starting from move one.
In the Open event, the top-seeded teams include Superchess from Romania (with an average rating of 2711), Novy Bor from the Czech Republic (2665), Anieres – Le Grand Echiquier from France (2657), Offerspill Sjakkubb from Norway (2650), and Schachclub Viernheim 1934 e.V. from Germany (2649). Notable players in the event include GM Magnus Carlsen (Offerspill Sjakklubb), GM Viswanathan Anand (Superchess), GM Richard Rapport (Superchess), GM Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (Schachclub Viernheim 1934 e.V.), GM Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (Anieres – Le Grand Echiquier), and GM Vincent Keymer (Novy Bor).
In the Women's tournament, Monte Carlo from Monaco (with an average rating of 2496) takes the top seed position. Other highly rated teams include Superchess (Romania, 2454), Garuda Ajka BSK (Hungary, 2432), SP Gaz Ukraine (Ukraine, 2388), and Tajfun SK Ljubljana (Slovenia, 2364). Notable players in the Women's event include GM Mariya Muzychuk (Monte Carlo), GM Anna Muzychuk (Monte Carlo), GM Bella Khotenashvili (Garuda Ajka BSK), GM Elisabeth Paehtz (Monte Carlo), and GM Nino Batsiashvili (Superchess).
The total prize fund for the tournament amounts to 45,000 EUR, with 29,000 EUR allocated for the Open competition and 15,000 EUR for the Women's tournament. Additionally, there are individual prizes of 500 EUR each for the best performers from a "Balkan Chess Federation" member federation club. The championship takes place at the official hotel of the event, the Grand Blue Fafa Resort, a 5-star venue.
