Europe stuns with clean sweep in Ryder Cup opening session, leading 4-0

Posted : 29 September 2023
In a stunning opening session, Europe surged ahead in their quest to reclaim the Ryder Cup, securing a clean sweep of wins to lead the United States 4-0. The leaderboard was dominated by Europe, with Rory McIlroy sinking a birdie putt on the fourth hole, setting the tone for Luke Donald's team.

This marks the first time that Europe has won all four opening session matches in Ryder Cup history. Captain Luke Donald expressed his delight, acknowledging the importance of taking early leads in match play. However, he cautioned that the United States would be eager to bounce back, emphasizing the need for Europe to maintain their momentum.

The top match saw Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton secure a commanding 4&3 victory, a feat matched by Viktor Hovland and Ludvig Aberg. Shane Lowry and Sepp Straka secured a 2&1 win, while Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood also triumphed with a 2&1 score.

Notably, Europe never trailed in any of the matches and won 22 holes compared to the American's 10, highlighting their dominance in the morning session. This marks the first time Europe has won the opening session since 2006 when they went on to win all five sessions and secured an 18½-9½ victory.

The decision to play the alternate shot foursomes in the opening session paid off for Europe, with the team's strong performance vindicating Captain Donald's strategic choice. The electric atmosphere at the first tee, with thousands of fans in attendance, added to the intensity of the event.

While there were some unsavory moments, such as boos and derogatory comments directed at American players, it was an overall exceptional morning for Europe as they set the stage for an exciting Ryder Cup competition.
