England ended the second day of the first Test in Multan on a promising note, reaching 96-1 in response to Pakistan's formidable total of 556, bolstered by a remarkable century from Agha Salman. The tourists faced an early setback with stand-in captain Ollie Pope dismissed for a duck on just his second ball, but Zak Crawley and Joe Root contributed with scores of 64 and 32, respectively, leaving England in a decent position at stumps.
Pakistan's innings was marked by significant contributions from Salman, who scored an unbeaten 104, and Saud Shakeel, who added 82. This strong performance came on the heels of impressive centuries from Shan Masood, who scored 151, and Abdullah Shafique, who made 102 on Monday. England’s bowlers struggled to contain the scoring, as Salman and Shakeel’s partnership added crucial runs to the total.
Pope's dismissal came early in the innings when he attempted an uppish pull shot off pacer Naseem Shah, only to be brilliantly caught by Aamer Jamal at mid-wicket. With Ben Stokes injured, Pope was promoted to open the batting after Ben Duckett suffered a thumb injury while fielding. England needs 261 more runs to avoid a follow-on, a target that seems attainable given the batting-friendly conditions.
Salman not only celebrated his century but also reached a personal milestone of 1,000 Test runs during his innings. He shared an impressive partnership of 85 runs for the ninth wicket with Shaheen Shah Afridi, who scored 26 runs. Despite his solid performance, Leach was England's standout bowler, claiming three wickets for 160 runs, while Gus Atkinson took two wickets for 99 runs. The match will continue with the remaining Tests scheduled in Multan from October 15-19 and Rawalpindi from October 24-28.
