England set to face Argentina in Rugby World Cup third-place play-off

Posted : 25 October 2023
Flanker Tom Curry is set to start for England in the Rugby World Cup third-place play-off against Argentina, despite a recent controversy. Curry's allegations of abuse by South Africa hooker Bongi Mbonambi in England's semi-final match are currently under investigation by World Rugby.

In this lineup, Marcus Smith will play at full-back, with Henry Arundell taking the wing position as part of eight new starters. Ben Youngs, the scrum-half, is making his first start in the tournament.

Courtney Lawes, who has announced his retirement from international rugby after the tournament, has been left out of the 23-man matchday squad, marking the end of his England career. Sam Underhill, who was called up as a replacement for Jack Willis during the pool stages, is making his first appearance in the tournament.

Freddie Steward will shift from full-back to the wing to accommodate Smith's inclusion, meaning Johnny May will not be in the lineup.

Owen Farrell will continue in the fly-half position, while coach Steve Borthwick has chosen an all-new front row consisting of Ellis Genge, Theo Dan, and Will Stuart. Ollie Chessum replaces George Martin in the second row to partner with Maro Itoje.

Borthwick emphasized the importance of finishing the tournament on a positive note and expressed eagerness for the challenge presented by a strong Argentina side. England previously defeated Argentina in their opening match of the tournament.

The game is significant for England as they aim to secure third place, having reached the bronze-medal match for only the second time in their history, the last time being in 1995 when they faced France.
