England's World Cup defense in jeopardy after shocking defeat to Afghanistan
Posted : 15 October 2023
England faced a significant upset at the hands of Afghanistan in Delhi, as they suffered a disappointing 69-run defeat that puts their World Cup defense in a precarious position. While this loss to Afghanistan, their first in any format, doesn't eliminate England's chances, it leaves them with limited margin for error in their remaining six group stage matches.
Afghanistan posted a total of 284 all out, thanks to a lackluster bowling performance by England. However, under the lights, England's batting lineup struggled, ultimately getting bowled out for 215. Early wickets included Jonny Bairstow falling lbw to left-armer Fazalhaq Farooqi, Joe Root being bowled by Mujeeb Ur Rahman for 11, and Dawid Malan offering a tame catch to extra cover.
The only significant resistance came from Harry Brook, who scored 66, but even he couldn't prevent the downfall of the English side. Captain Jos Buttler was the fourth to fall, dismissed comprehensively by seamer Naveen-ul-Haq.
England's erratic seamers initially allowed Afghanistan to build a strong foundation, with opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz scoring a brisk 80 off 57 balls. Adil Rashid's 3-42 helped regain some control for England, but loose bowling towards the end, along with a contribution of 58 from Ikram Alikhil, pushed Afghanistan to a competitive score.
This victory marked only Afghanistan's second win in a 50-over World Cup and was met with exuberant celebrations from their passionate supporters. England, seeking to defend the title they won four years ago, have now lost two of their first three games and will face the in-form South Africa next in Mumbai on Saturday.
