Elvis Smylie Leads Rain-Soaked Australian PGA Championship with Stellar Round

Posted : 21 November 2024

Elvis Smylie made a sensational start to the Australian PGA Championship, claiming the first-round lead with a six-under-par 65 at Royal Queensland on Thursday. The 22-year-old, who is the son of tennis Grand Slam doubles champion Liz Smylie, finished two shots clear of 2022 British Open winner Cameron Smith and former world No. 1 Jason Day. Smylie sealed his impressive round with a remarkable bunker shot on the par-5 ninth, holing from an adjacent sand trap to secure a birdie and complete his round in style.

His round featured eight birdies and two bogeys, putting him in pole position as he enters day two of the tournament. Smylie expressed satisfaction with his game, noting that his performance was strong in all areas. "Technically, I didn't touch the green and made birdie, which is a good way to finish," he said, emphasizing the positives from the round. The 22-year-old has a history at Royal Queensland, and his familiarity with the course was evident in his solid play.

Behind Smylie, a group of players are trailing closely, including Swiss golfer Joel Girrbach, Australia's Matias Sanchez, and Frenchman Victor Perez, all at five under. Perez, who is aiming for his fourth DP World Tour win, was confident despite the heavy rain expected for the rest of the event. "It’s a lot easier when you’re playing well," Perez remarked, adding that the conditions could create good separation among the field, and he felt free-flowing in his play.

Meanwhile, Smith and Day shot 67s to join a pack at four under, alongside LIV golfer Marc Leishman. Smith, who is seeking his fourth Australian PGA win, found his rhythm on the back nine after a slow start. "Seeing that putt go in (provided) a little bit of confidence," Smith said. Day, making his first competitive appearance in Australia in seven years, was warmly welcomed by the crowd, and reflected positively on the experience despite the long absence.
