Egypt showcased its dominance in modern pentathlon by achieving a remarkable feat at the UIPM 2024 U19 World Championships held in Druskininkai, Lithuania. The nation kicked off the competition with an impressive clean sweep of gold medals in the Team Relay events, marking a continuation of its success from the recent UIPM 2024 Pentathlon U17 World Championships, where it had already secured five gold medals. In the women's category, Jana Attia and Farida Khalil emerged victorious, while the men's event saw Mohamed Hassan and Osama Zaki clinch the top spot, underscoring Egypt's rising prowess in the sport.
The day's events were characterized by high energy, particularly with the introduction of the Obstacle discipline at the global U19 level for only the second time. The Egyptian women's team faced early competition from Germany, who took an initial lead in the event. However, Attia and Khalil showcased their skills in the Laser Run, effectively overtaking their German rivals to secure gold. Hungary claimed the bronze medal, demonstrating the competitive nature of the tournament.
In the men's relay, Egypt's Hassan and Zaki also displayed remarkable consistency, overcoming challenges from a strong Czechia team led by Matej Kornel and Tobias Raska. With 17 nations participating in this segment, Egypt set the pace by excelling in the fencing discipline, which laid a solid foundation for their eventual victory. Kazakhstan completed the podium in third place, illustrating the competitive landscape of the championships.
Both Attia and Khalil expressed their excitement after their win, with Attia emphasizing her joy at winning gold in her first Women’s Relay event. Khalil, a 13-year-old prodigy, is now aiming for a double championship title in both U17 and U19 categories. The competition will continue over the week, culminating in individual finals and a mixed relay, creating further opportunities for the athletes to shine.
The Men’s Relay further showcased Egypt's prowess, with Hassan and Zaki maintaining a lead throughout the events. Despite facing setbacks, including an injury for Zaki, the duo managed to clinch the gold medal, with Zaki noting the fun they had during the competition. As the championships progress, all eyes will be on these young athletes as they strive for further glory in the individual events ahead.
