Edo State Rugby Team demonstrated complete dominance in the Nigeria Rugby Football Federation (NRFF) South-South Rugby League, securing impressive victories in both the men's and women's categories.
The state’s male and female teams were forces to be reckoned with, blowing away their competition throughout the tournament.
The male team set the tone early, kicking off their campaign with a staggering 79-0 victory over Rivers Rugby Football Club.
This overwhelming performance was followed by a closely contested match against Delta RFC, where Edo emerged victorious with a hard-fought 10-7 win.
Team Delta had a bright start as they ran the ball from kickoff, pinning Edo in their 22-meter area for five minutes before they were awarded a penalty try by the referee, who spotted a high tackle on Friday Solomon.
Team Edo grew into the game and scored a well-worked try finished by fullback Anwar Aliyu.
The teams were separated by Edo's center, Festus Osaboro, who kicked a penalty in the 28th minute to give Edo the lead.
The second half was highly contested, with both teams failing to record any points.
The win solidified Edo Rugby's position as the team to beat in the South-South, showcasing their versatility and resilience on the field.
Delta RFC, in a determined display, defeated Rivers RFC 64-0 in their first match, which was one of the highest-scoring games of the league.
Despite their efforts, it wasn't enough to claim the championship title, which ultimately went to Edo RFC after their consistent performances in every match.
In the women's category, Edo RFC was equally dominant.
They kicked off their campaign with a commanding 39-0 victory over Rivers RFC, setting the standard for the rest of the tournament. Delta RFC also recorded a win against Rivers, beating them 29-0.
However, the stage was set for a decisive showdown between Edo and Delta in the final match.
Understanding the importance of this game, Edo’s women delivered an exceptional performance, defeating Delta RFC 40-0 to clinch the female championship title, following a hat trick of tries from the woman of the match, Chinaza Abah, and a brace from the ever-consistent Becky Okitikpi. Captain Mene Augustar converted five times to seal their victory.
With both the men's and women's teams crowned champions, Edo Rugby will now represent the South-South Rugby League in the national finals.
The date for the finals has yet to be announced, but expectations are high as Edo Rugby continues to prove itself as a dominant force in Nigerian rugby.
The tournament not only showcased the depth of talent in Edo State but also highlighted the growth and competitiveness of rugby in the South-South region.
The upcoming national finals will be a true test of Edo’s strength and determination as they aim to replicate their regional success on a national stage.
