Dutch cyclist Dylan Groenewegen secured a thrilling victory in a photo finish on stage six of the Tour de France, triumphing in a bunch sprint on the flat 163.5km route from Macon to Dijon. The stage, anticipated for its sprinter-friendly terrain following Mark Cavendish's historic win the previous day, saw the British rider out of contention, unable to replicate his record-breaking performance.
Groenewegen, riding for Team Jayco–AlUla, surged in the final meters to narrowly edge out Jasper Philipsen for his sixth career stage win and first since 2022. Philipsen, from Alpecin-Deceuninck, initially crossed the line first but was later relegated for veering and impeding Wout van Aert in the final sprint.
Meanwhile, there were no changes in the general classification standings, with Tadej Pogacar maintaining his lead ahead of Remco Evenepoel and defending champion Jonas Vingegaard.
Mark Renshaw, sporting director of Astana Qazaqstan, reflected on Cavendish's missed opportunity on stage six after his record-setting win, noting the team's strategic focus on this stage as a potential final chance for Cavendish to extend his record before retiring.
Friday's stage will feature an individual time trial covering 25.3km from Nuits-Saint-Georges to Gevrey-Chambertin, marking a shift in dynamics as riders vie for time advantages in the overall standings.
