Dylan Frittelli secured his first DP World Tour title in six years with a remarkable two-shot triumph at the Bahrain Championship. The South African, who had contemplated retirement in 2023, finished two strokes ahead of Zander Lombard and Jesper Svensson on 13 under, carding a final round of 71.
Frittelli's victory, his first since the 2017 Mauritius Open, marks a triumphant return to the top after facing challenges and considering giving up the sport last year.
Reflecting on his journey, the 33-year-old acknowledged the tough times, stating, "Last year I was in a couple of spots where I thought I was giving the game up, to be honest. It feels awesome to be back on top right now."
Frittelli, a previous champion on various tours, including the DP World, PGA, and European Challenge Tours, contemplated leaving the game after a challenging season on the PGA Tour, where he missed the cut or withdrew from 23 out of 27 starts.
Detailing his challenging path, Frittelli mentioned, "It's been a long road in the last five or six years since I left the DP World Tour and went to the States. It was a pretty tough year last year." However, the golfer found resilience towards the end of the previous season, receiving crucial support from his physio, coaches, trainers, and loved ones.
Frittelli, ranked 434th in the world, showcased mental toughness as he overcame setbacks during the final day, dropping shots initially but responding with three crucial birdies in the closing holes to seal the well-deserved victory.
