Dutch cyclist Jeffrey Hoogland breaks men's 1km time trial world record

Dutch cyclist Jeffrey Hoogland shattered the men's 1km time trial world record by nearly a second, clocking a time of 55.433 seconds in Mexico. He surpassed Francois Pervis' longstanding 2013 record of 56.303 seconds, making it the longest-standing track world record to be broken. The record-breaking feat took place at the Aguascalientes Velodrome, known for its fast track and high-altitude conditions, situated 1,887 meters above sea level.
Following his remarkable achievement, Hoogland expressed his feelings, stating, "I can't really enjoy it yet. It hurts everywhere, but I'm very happy with the world record - that's why I came here." The 30-year-old cyclist, who received assistance from Netherlands national coach Mehdi Kordi and required additional oxygen after his effort, shared his experience of the event and the thrill of cycling at such altitude. The raucous cheers at the finish line confirmed the world record, leaving Hoogland exhilarated.
The men's kilometer time trial record has seen few adjustments since Arnaud Tournant of France became the first to complete it in under a minute back in 2001. Notably, the 1km time trial has not been included in the Olympic program since Sir Chris Hoy secured the gold medal for Great Britain in 2004.
