DP World Tour: Following the penalties and suspensions of LIV players, Henrik Stenson resigns

Posted : 12 May 2023
Henrik Stenson has left the DP World Tour after the organization further penalized 26 players for participating in LIV Golf competitions without their will.

When Stenson joined the LIV, financed by Saudi Arabia, in July 2022, he lost his position as captain of the European Ryder Cup squad for this year's competition in Rome.

For each violation of a tournament regulation, the DP World Tour issued bans of up to eight tournaments and penalties of up to £100,000 per.

"It is sad it has come to this, but it wasn't unexpected," said Stenson, 47.

In an interview with Golf Digest, the 2016 Open winner added: "They left me with no other choice so I have resigned. That's it. I don't really feel like it will do any good to dig into this too deeply.

"I'm appreciative of what the tour has done for me over the years. But they have chosen how they want to view the future. And we have obviously done the same. Unfortunately, they don't go together at this point."

Sanctions for the DP World Tour are determined on a case-by-case basis, with fines ranging from £12,500 to £100,000 for each violation and pertaining to the time frame of 22 June 2022 to 2 April 2023.

The total cost of Stenson's fines, he admitted, was "anywhere between £50,000 and £75,000 per LIV event," although he added that he had not calculated it.

He participated in four competitions in 2022 and five in 2023. Although the DP World Tour states that "further sanctions" for tournaments played after 2 April "will be considered in due course," two of those were beyond the cutoff date of that day.

Players who have resigned from the league will not be allowed to rejoin until their fine has been paid, at which point their suspensions will take effect.

Stenson resigns from the organization alongside Richard Bland, Sergio Garcia, Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter, and others.

Twelve players who had appealed against being fined £100,000 and banned from the Scottish Open for competing in the first tournament of LIV Golf in June 2022 without authorization lost their case in favour of the European-based tour in April.
