De Roey leads Investec SA Women's Open amidst windy challenges

Posted : 26 April 2024

When the sky filled with billowing clouds and fierce gusts swept over the Erinvale Country and Golf Estate, Manon De Roey of Belgium maintained composure, delivering a remarkable five-under-par 67, positioning herself as the leader of the Investec South African Women’s Open as the weekend approached.

With the Helderberg mountain range as a backdrop, De Roey stood at eight under par overall, edging out England’s Rosie Davies by a single stroke, who posted a solid 71. Stacy Bregman, flying the South African flag, secured her place as the leading local contender, standing at one under par in this jointly sanctioned tournament by the Sunshine Ladies Tour and Ladies European Tour.

Undeterred by the challenging weather, De Roey showcased her resilience by sinking birdies on three of her first four holes, demonstrating her adeptness at reading the greens amidst the gusts. Reflecting on her performance, De Roey attributed her success to a combination of skill and experience, citing a previous tournament in Saudi Arabia with similarly adverse conditions earlier in the year as instrumental in her preparation for the challenges at Erinvale.

Sharing the spotlight, Davies of England embraced the day’s difficulties, acknowledging the mental fortitude required to navigate the windy conditions. Despite encountering setbacks on the back nine, Davies maintained her focus, closing out her round with three consecutive birdies, infusing her with renewed vigor for the upcoming rounds. With an eye on the historic title and anticipating further wind challenges, Davies remained optimistic, recognizing the unpredictable nature of the game and embracing the opportunity to compete at the highest level.

As the tournament progressed into the weekend, both De Roey and Davies remained poised for the challenges ahead, drawing upon their resilience and adaptability to navigate the unpredictable elements and fierce competition. With the winds likely to persist, the stage was set for an exhilarating conclusion, where patience, skill, and mental fortitude would be the determining factors in crowning the champion of the Investec South African Women’s Open.
