Tyrone Davidowitz will enter the final round of the Betway Big Easy Tour’s sixth event in Soweto with a narrow one-stroke lead, achieved through a resilient performance in challenging weather. Playing at the Soweto Country Club, Davidowitz carded an impressive four-under 68 on Wednesday, bringing his overall score to seven-under for the tournament. This performance places him just ahead of local contender Musiwalo Nethunzwi as he seeks to claim victory in the event’s final 18 holes.
The Hermanus Golf Club player showcased his ability to manage difficult conditions, particularly on the back nine where he started his round. His strategic play and calm demeanor allowed him to complete the nine holes bogey-free, collecting four birdies along the way.
The front nine proved more challenging, but Davidowitz held his ground, managing to limit his mistakes to a single bogey on the 12th hole. Reflecting on the day's play, Davidowitz acknowledged the wind’s impact but noted that he successfully capitalized on the downwind holes and focused on making par when conditions were less favorable.
Davidowitz recognized the difficulty of the course layout, especially given the firm fairways and tight doglegs. He emphasized the importance of keeping the ball on the right side of the fairways to increase his chances of reaching the greens, an approach he intends to maintain going into the final round.
Unfazed by the strong competition, Davidowitz expressed excitement about the prospect of competing against skilled players like Nethunzwi. His strategy, he shared, will be to stay consistent, keep pressure at bay, and focus on his own game plan.
Local favorite Musiwalo Nethunzwi also had a strong showing, leveraging his familiarity with the course to secure a matching 68 that brought his total to six-under, placing him in close contention. Nethunzwi’s round was marked by an impressive mix of seven birdies, an eagle, and five bogeys.
Meanwhile, newcomer Ryan Van Der Klis delivered the lowest round of the day with a 67, joining Slade Picketing and Stals Swart at five-under and within striking distance. As the Sunshine Tour’s development series, the Betway Big Easy Tour offers these players a chance to secure main Tour cards, with the top 12 on the Order of Merit advancing at season’s end.
