Daniel Hillier wins first DP World Tour title, Open Championship spot

Daniel Hillier from New Zealand secured his first DP World Tour title with an impressive victory at the British Masters held at The Belfry.

The 24-year-old golfer sealed his triumph with a remarkable performance on the final day, sinking a 40-foot putt for an eagle on the 15th hole, followed by a birdie on the next hole and another eagle on the 17th.

Hillier finished the tournament at 10 under par, earning him a spot in the upcoming Open Championship and a prize of £468,000.
 
Expressing his astonishment, Hillier shared his feelings about the win, stating that it would take some time for him to fully comprehend the achievement. Starting the day three shots behind the joint leaders, he admitted to feeling uncomfortable with his driver early on.

However, he capitalized on the opportunities that came his way, ultimately producing an outstanding performance to claim victory. Reflecting on seeing his name on the leaderboard, Hillier admitted it was a blur but expressed his elation.
 
Oliver Wilson of England, who was one of the six players sharing the lead after the penultimate round, finished in second place alongside American Gunner Wiebe, trailing Hillier by two shots. Wiebe, ranked 1,349th in the world, also celebrated the occasion as he secured a place in the Open Championship.

He described the Open as a major tournament he had cherished since childhood, recalling his early-morning TV sessions watching the event and attempting to replicate the shots. The fact that his father, Mark, played his final major at the same course made the qualification even more special for Wiebe.
 
In addition, Wilson claimed the last qualifying spot for the Open after a crucial birdie on the 18th hole. His birdie denied Scotland's Calum Hill, who had to settle for a share of fourth place with fellow countryman Ewen Ferguson and the pre-tournament favorite Justin Rose.
