Cricket World Cup 2023: Australia and Sri Lanka seek redemption after early losses

Posted : 16 October 2023
Australia and Sri Lanka, both past champions, are eager to turn their fortunes around in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023, having suffered two consecutive losses at the start of the tournament.

The outcome of their upcoming match is crucial, as it could put the losing team on the brink of missing out on a spot in the semi-finals. This is because, in the 2019 edition, Pakistan was eliminated with three losses and one no-result match based on net run-rate.

Australia, a five-time champion, faces concerns in their lineup, with several batters struggling to establish solid innings in their first two matches. There are also questions regarding their selection of three frontline fast bowlers. While Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and captain Pat Cummins have made an impact at times, it hasn't been enough to contain the opposition batters in their losses to India and South Africa.

Sri Lanka, on the other hand, faces challenges with the absence of their captain, Dasun Shanaka, due to injury. Shanaka's quad injury during the loss to Pakistan has ruled him out for at least three weeks, which is a blow to Sri Lanka's aspirations. Vice-captain Kusal Mendis is expected to lead the team against Australia.

In terms of key players, Australia relies on dynamic all-rounder Glenn Maxwell, who has taken on additional responsibility with the ball in the absence of specialist spinners. Maxwell has been instrumental in Australia's bowling performance. While he's yet to shine with the bat, his history of punishing bowlers with powerful hits makes him a crucial asset for Australia's late push for the semi-finals.

Sri Lanka's batting hopes rest on Sadeera Samarawickrama, who recently scored a maiden ODI century against Pakistan. His formidable performance, although not enough to secure a win, highlights his pivotal role in Sri Lanka's campaign, especially with Shanaka sidelined. Samarawickrama may also be called upon to take on wicketkeeping duties to ensure Mendis can focus on leading the team and batting effectively in the upcoming match against Australia.
