Colombian Cyclist Miguel Angel Lopez Receives Four-Year Doping Ban

Posted : 30 May 2024

Colombian cyclist Miguel Angel Lopez has received a four-year ban from competition after the International Cycling Union (UCI) found him guilty of violating anti-doping regulations by using and possessing the banned substance Menotropin prior to the 2022 Giro d'Italia.

The UCI imposed the ban following a provisional suspension issued on July 25, 2023, which will remain in effect until July 24, 2027. Lopez's association with a Spanish doctor implicated in a doping investigation led to his dismissal from the Astana team in December 2022.

The UCI's decision was based on evidence provided by Spanish authorities, including police and the national doping agency, strengthening the case against Lopez.

Despite his previous achievements, including third-place finishes in the Giro d'Italia and the Vuelta a Espana in 2018 and a stage victory in the 2020 Tour de France, Lopez's career is now overshadowed by the ban and the allegations of doping-related misconduct.
