Collin Morikawa recalled the emotional moment when he had to withdraw from the 2023 Memorial Tournament due to a back injury, nearly brought to tears on the morning of the final round. He was tied for ninth place at 4-under par and just two shots behind the leaders when back spasms forced him out. Morikawa was particularly disappointed because he felt he had a chance to compete for the title.
Returning for this year's Memorial Tournament, which begins on Thursday at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio, Morikawa is eager to pursue the victory that slipped away last year. The event is hosted by golf legend Jack Nicklaus, and Morikawa is looking forward to potentially receiving a congratulatory handshake from Nicklaus on the 18th green. Reflecting on last year's withdrawal, Morikawa expressed his frustration and sadness, as he had to personally inform Nicklaus of his decision to withdraw due to injury.
The 27-year-old Morikawa, a two-time major champion since turning professional in 2019, has six PGA Tour victories, including a win at the Workday Charity Open at Muirfield Village in 2020. However, that victory did not include the iconic handshake from Nicklaus. Morikawa had another close call at the Memorial in 2021, when he lost to Patrick Cantlay in a playoff. He emphasized the significance of potentially receiving a handshake from Nicklaus, recognizing the immense contributions and legacy of the 18-time major champion.
Currently ranked eighth in the Official World Golf Ranking and sixth in the FedExCup points standings, Morikawa has made the cut in 11 of 13 events this season, with five top-10 finishes. After securing a fourth-place finish at the Charles Schwab Challenge on May 26, he is heading into this week's tournament with positive momentum. Morikawa praised Muirfield Village, describing it as a course that tests every aspect of a player's game, emphasizing the need for focus and precision from the first hole to the last.
