Chris Wakelin expressed that defeating Ding Junhui in China was a dream come true after his impressive 5-3 victory at the Wuhan Open. The match took place in front of an enthusiastic local crowd, marking Wakelin’s first competitive outing against Ding on Chinese soil. Despite this being a new experience for him, Wakelin has recently shown he can excel on snooker's biggest stages, gaining confidence through his performances in major tournaments.
In the past year, Wakelin has made significant strides in his career, capturing his first ranking title at the Shoot Out and finishing as runner-up to Judd Trump at the Northern Ireland Open. He also reached the semi-finals of the English Open, once again facing Trump. With another clash against the accomplished player scheduled for the quarter-finals, Wakelin is poised to continue his strong run in the tournament.
Ding, a 14-time ranking event champion, now faces the challenge of waiting for his first full format title since winning the 2019 UK Championship. The match began with Ding taking the lead by winning the first frame with a break of 69.
However, Wakelin quickly turned the tables, scoring back-to-back centuries of 128, 139, and 132 to take a commanding 3-1 lead at the mid-session interval. Although Ding fought back with an 87 break to reduce the deficit, Wakelin maintained his composure and eventually closed out the match despite a tense moment in the seventh frame.
Wakelin reflected on the thrilling atmosphere, noting the crowd's support for Ding and how it motivated him to perform at his best. He acknowledged that in the past, he might have struggled under such pressure but was pleased with his ability to thrive in the moment.
The match not only showcased his skills, including scoring three consecutive centuries but also reinforced his growing self-belief and temperament on the professional stage. In other matches, Zhang Anda edged past Mark Joyce 5-4, winning the final frame on a re-spotted black, while Xiao Guodong triumphed 5-2 over Barry Hawkins, setting up a quarter-final showdown with Shaun Murphy.
