Chevron Championship: An emotional first major victory for Lilia Vu at Carlton Woods
Posted : 25 April 2023
It was a major with everything but audiences that were large enough to match its stature.
Lilia Vu's first major triumph last Sunday should have been witnessed by more spectators than the few crowds who showed up for the $4 million (US$5.1 million) tournament record.
It completed the exciting final day of the Chevron Championship at the opening hole of a sudden-death play-off.
The event had moved from its illustrious home in California's Mission Hills to Carlton Woods, close to Houston, the center of American big oil. It was a business decision.
But seeing the golfing drama unfold—and there was enough of it—made you reminisce about the dreary Covid days of games played in secret.
It's a terrible tragedy since the Chevron had all the components, but there weren't nearly enough galleries to give the event a big-time vibe. The curriculum was an appropriate main exam that revealed a deserving winner with an engaging backstory.
Even though he stumbled in the last stretch before birdying the last hole to force extra holes, Angel Yin, the golfer who lost in sudden death, also has a motivational story to share.
