Celine Boutier wins Evian Championship, extending dominance

Posted : 30 July 2023
Celine Boutier, the crowd's favorite, secured her first major title with an impressive victory at the Evian Championship in France.

Starting the final round with a three-shot lead, the 29-year-old extended her dominance, finishing six strokes ahead with a final round score of 68, reaching a total of 14 under par.

This triumph marked a historic moment as Boutier became the first French winner at the prestigious Evian Resort Golf Club. Canada's defending champion, Brooke Henderson, finished in second place with a total score of eight under par.

Boutier displayed exceptional composure throughout the front nine, starting her round with three birdies in the opening five holes.

Reflecting on her achievement, Boutier expressed, "It was definitely not easy, and the conditions were tough, so I just tried to stay focused on each hole at a time. This tournament has been very special to me, and to hold this trophy is unbelievable. It has been my biggest dream ever since I started watching golf."

Although a bogey on the 13th hole cut her lead to four shots, Boutier responded with a brilliant birdie on the long 15th, virtually securing her victory. As Japan's Nasa Hataoka, her closest challenger, faltered and slipped to joint third on seven under, Boutier's position became even more secure.

In achieving this milestone, Boutier joins the exclusive club of French women to win a major, following in the footsteps of Catherine Lacoste, who claimed the 1967 US Women's Open as an amateur, and Patricia Meunier Lebouc, victorious at the Kraft Nabisco Championship in California 20 years ago.

Already an accomplished player on the LPGA Tour, with previous victories in the Drive On Championship and the French Open, Boutier's triumph at the Evian Championship further solidifies her status as a top-tier golfer.

In addition to Boutier's success, Scotland's Gemma Dryburgh displayed a strong performance, finishing eighth on the leaderboard with a commendable score of six under par.
