Posted : 16 November 2024

No fewer than 300 amateur and veteran golfers will compete for various prizes at the Chief of Defence (CDS), Gen. Christopher Musa National Peace and Unity Golf Tournament, scheduled to take place from Friday, November 15 to Saturday, November 16, 2024, at the Kaduna Golf Club in Kaduna.

The club captain, Ken Okonkwo, said that the tournament, organized by the Kaduna Golf Club in honour of General Musa, is primarily aimed at promoting a non-kinetic approach to support government efforts in restoring peace and unity in northern Nigeria, as well as addressing security challenges and fostering a culture of peace throughout the country.

Captain Okonkwo disclosed that participants from about thirty golf clubs across the country are expected to have a great time and enjoy top-quality golf on the 18-hole Green Golf Course of the Kaduna Golf Club.

He said the tournament will officially commence on Friday, November 15, with men’s amateur golfers with handicaps between 19-28 competing for honors, while the ceremonial tee-off will take place on Saturday, November 16, with General Musa expected to perform the official tee-off.

According to him, men and women with handicaps of 0-18, as well as veteran men and women, will take to the golf course on Saturday to compete for prizes in various categories.

“The tournament aims to promote a non-kinetic approach to restoring peace and unity in northern Nigeria and the country as a whole, supporting government efforts to address security challenges and foster a culture of peace throughout Nigeria.

“We are expecting over 300 amateur golfers from around the country, with those having handicaps between 19-28 playing on Friday, November 15. On Saturday, which is the ceremonial tee-off, men and women with handicaps of 0-18 will compete.”

“Let’s use this tournament to spread the message of peace, because, as General Christopher Musa said, peace and unity are the only things that will bring progress to Nigeria in our current situation. We are using the tournament to promote peace and unity to everyone,” Nwankwo said.

Also speaking about the tournament, after a minute’s silence in honor of the late COAS Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, the representative of CDS General Musa, General Bala Isandu (retired), said that the CDS has introduced new concepts that are all-encompassing. "He has held several sports tournaments with the aim of encouraging peaceful coexistence among people and promoting military-civil relationships."

He described the media as key to ensuring peace in the country and as an essential source of information, which he said is largely obtained from the media space.

Adding his voice to the tournament, the Board of Trustee Secretary of the Kaduna Golf Club, Abayomi Oyelola, reiterated that KGC and its course are among the best in the country.

“The management is doing well and deserves encouragement,” he said, while commending the CDS for recognizing the Kaduna Golf Club and deeming it fit to host the tournament in Kaduna, his home state.

Meanwhile, KGC is expected to host the First Bank Golf Tournament on November 30, 2024, while the BOT Golf Open is scheduled for December 7, 2024, and the Ladies Open Tournament will take place on January 9, 2025.
