Cavendish remains uncertain about his future after Girmay's victory

Posted : 02 November 2024

Mark Cavendish, the legendary cyclist, opted to remain tight-lipped about his future as speculation arises regarding a possible change of heart about his retirement. This came after he secured a third-place finish behind Biniam Girmay at the Tour de France Saitama Criterium held in Japan on Saturday. The 39-year-old rider, who holds the record for the most stage wins in Tour history with 35 victories, is scheduled to participate in his final race in Singapore next week.

Cavendish expressed a nonchalant attitude towards next year’s Tour de France, stating, “I will see,” indicating that his perspective had shifted despite earlier commitments not to compete again. When asked if the Singapore race would mark the end of his illustrious career, he deflected, focusing on the current event instead. "I'm here in Saitama," he noted, reiterating his intention to concentrate on the race at hand.

In the Saitama Criterium, Cavendish faced tough conditions, finishing third amid pouring rain. The race concluded with an exhilarating sprint where Girmay narrowly outpaced Slovenia’s Primoz Roglic to clinch the victory. Roglic, who recently celebrated a record-equalling fourth win at the Vuelta a España, made a break from the peloton approximately 3 kilometers from the finish line.

Girmay, who made history as the first African to wear the green jersey for the most sprint points in the Tour de France earlier this year, showcased his determination and speed to catch Roglic at the line. "That's one of the nicest finishes for me," he remarked, highlighting his all-out effort to reach the finish line first.

Despite the relentless rain, enthusiastic fans lined the streets of Saitama, creating an electric atmosphere for the race. Girmay, who recently extended his contract with the Intermarche-Wanty team following his Tour triumph, enjoyed vocal support from a small contingent of Eritrean fans. The young cyclist shared, "If you win, it’s always special," emphasizing the joy of victory regardless of past successes.

Spain’s Roger Adria was unable to finish the race due to a crash involving two other riders, illustrating the unpredictable nature of cycling competitions. Additionally, Australia’s Ben O’Connor withdrew from the event after sustaining injuries in a time trial prior to the race, highlighting the risks cyclists face on the course.

As Cavendish navigates the end of his career, his reflections and decisions regarding his future remain uncertain, leaving fans and fellow cyclists eager for any hints he might drop in the days to come.
