In a dramatic conclusion on her home turf, Spain's Carlota Ciganda sank a crucial putt that secured Europe's retention of the Solheim Cup as they tied 14-14 with the United States.
Ciganda's two-foot putt on the 17th hole was enough to defeat Nelly Korda in a nail-biting finish at Finca Cortesin.
With a perfect record of four wins in four matches, Ciganda's performance was pivotal, and she was embraced by her emotional captain, Suzann Pettersen.
Pettersen expressed her belief that it was destiny, with Carlota Ciganda, in her native Spain, determining the outcome. She recalled walking with Ciganda on the 16th hole, telling her that the fate of the match was now in her hands, to which Ciganda responded with determination.
Ciganda, overwhelmed with emotion, expressed her pride in accomplishing this feat for Suzann, for Spain, and for the entire supportive family and Spanish crowd. She emphasized her love for Pettersen and her belief that Pettersen deserved this victory.
The Solheim Cup remained balanced at 8-8 heading into the final day's singles matches, and Europe needed to reach 14 points to retain the cup.
