On Wednesday, the streets of Manila were alive with excitement as thousands of fans gathered for a jubilant parade celebrating Carlos Yulo's return as a double gold medallist from the Paris Olympics. The 24-year-old gymnast, who secured victories in both the men’s floor exercises and vault, rode through the city on a float alongside other Filipino Olympians. Yulo's achievements have given the Philippines its most remarkable Olympic result in a century, bringing the nation's total gold medal count to three.
The parade saw Yulo proudly displaying his medals, flashing victory signs to the cheering crowd. The float, adorned with the Olympic rings, was surrounded by a sea of Philippine flags and enthusiastic fans taking selfies. Giant posters of Yulo’s image were hung from electric posts along the route, further highlighting the significance of the celebration.
Yulo's success has sparked renewed hope among the 115 million Filipinos, many of whom face challenges such as poverty, natural disasters, and corruption. Growing up in a modest neighborhood in Manila, Yulo's journey from a young gymnast fascinated by the sport to an Olympic champion reflects the power of dedication and perseverance. His path took him from local training facilities to Japan at the age of 16, where he trained under coach Munehiro Kugimiya to achieve his world-class status.
The Filipino government has honored Yulo with substantial rewards. President Ferdinand Marcos presented him with a presidential citation and a monetary bonus of 20 million pesos ($350,000), in addition to the 10 million pesos mandated for Olympic gold medallists. Yulo also received various gifts, including a fully-furnished three-bedroom condominium and a lifetime supply of chicken barbecue and Japanese noodles. A gastroenterologist has even offered him free colonoscopy tests starting at age 45.
