Candice Lill Aims for Olympic Medal After World Cup Successes

Posted : 23 July 2024

The past few months have profoundly transformed Candice Lill’s perspective. Prior to June, the South African mountain biker aimed for a top 10 or maybe 15 spot at the Paris Olympic Games. However, after securing podium finishes twice on the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup circuit, her confidence has soared, and now she views winning a medal as a realistic goal.

On June 16, Lill claimed bronze in Val di Sol, Italy, followed by a silver medal at Les Gets, France, on July 7. Reflecting on her recent achievements, she shared from her training base in Italy, “It's been going really well, especially the last weeks and months. It's all come together really nicely, I've had some of my best results on the international stage and it's really changed the game for me in terms of what I'm aiming for in Paris.”

Lill's Olympic dream ignited in 2004 when, as a primary school student, she avidly watched and re-watched the swimming and athletics events at the Athens Games. This passion led to her selection for Team South Africa at the London 2012 Olympics, where she finished 27th, and again in Tokyo, where she placed 24th. Each experience taught her valuable lessons, shaping her journey and mental resilience.

Since then, Lill has achieved significant milestones, including a Commonwealth Games bronze in 2022 and a World Championships marathon silver in 2023. However, her recent World Cup medals have been the most impactful.

As she prepares for Paris 2024, Lill's outlook is transformed; she now heads into the competition with a strong belief in her ability to win a medal. "I've never been in a place before where I actually have such confidence in my training and racing," she said. "I need to aim for gold, and if I do, there's still silver and bronze. But I need to race as if I'll get gold, and that actually might happen." Her determination and love for the sport remain her driving forces as she continues to chase her Olympic dreams.
