Canadian Open: Nick Taylor became the first Canadian to win the Canadian Open since 1954

Posted : 12 June 2023
In a captivating finale at the Canadian Open, Tommy Fleetwood narrowly missed out on his first PGA Tour victory as Nick Taylor secured the win with a remarkable 72-foot putt on the fourth playoff hole at Oakdale Golf and Country Club.

With this triumph, Taylor, aged 35, becomes the first Canadian to claim victory at the event since Pat Fletcher in 1954. Overwhelmed by his achievement, Taylor expressed, "I don't think it's going to sink in for quite some time what happened today."

Tyrrell Hatton and Aaron Rai, both hailing from England, shared third place, finishing at 16 under par. Despite the rainy conditions in Toronto, fans erupted in celebration as Taylor's eagle putt found its mark, securing his third tour victory.

Taylor reflected on the significance of his win, stating, "This is for all the guys through the years, this is for my family at home. To kind of break that curse, if you want to call it that, I'm pretty speechless."

After a phenomenal final round, Taylor erased a three-stroke deficit with a superb six-under 66, matching Fleetwood's clubhouse target of 72. In the subsequent playoff, Fleetwood and Taylor both birdied the first hole, followed by pars on the next two holes to prolong the contest.

Ultimately, Taylor clinched a thrilling victory with his incredible putt on the par-five 18th hole, leaving Fleetwood as a runner-up. Fleetwood graciously acknowledged the moment, stating, "Nice moment for Nick and the fans here. So it's great to be a part of that Sunday and that playoff. I had my chances, really. It wasn't to be this time. But, yeah, congratulations to him."

Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy's bid for a third consecutive Canadian Open title faded as he finished joint ninth after a final round of 72. Justin Rose, another English golfer, concluded the tournament at 13 under, securing an eighth-place finish.
