Cameron Smith Leads Ripper GC to LIV Golf Team Championship Victory

Posted : 23 September 2024

Cameron Smith and his Ripper GC team triumphed in the LIV Golf Team Championship, marking a significant win for their native Australia while also securing a substantial prize. The all-Australian squad, consisting of Smith, Lucas Herbert, Matt Jones, and Marc Leishman, narrowly defeated 4Aces GC to claim the title outside Dallas, effectively concluding the third season of the Saudi-backed breakaway tour.

The final round unfolded at Maridoe Golf Club in Carrollton, Texas, where teams competed in 18 holes of stroke play, with the combined scores of all players determining the team's overall performance. Ripper GC finished the day at 11-under 277, three strokes clear of their competitors. Herbert and Smith made crucial birdie putts in the final stretch, which helped secure their victory as they navigated a tight leaderboard.

In a thrilling conclusion, Ripper GC emerged victorious as the third different team to win the LIV championship in three seasons, walking away with $14 million from the total $50 million prize pool. Smith described the experience as "unreal," acknowledging the stress of monitoring the leaderboard throughout the round. Herbert, known as "The Gladiator," showcased resilience by recovering from an early triple bogey to finish strong with three consecutive birdies, propelling Ripper ahead in the late stages.

As the competition heated up, 4Aces GC, led by Dustin Johnson, and Iron Heads GC tied for second place at 8-under, while Legion XIII finished fourth at 6-under. Johnson struggled on the final hole, hitting his tee shot into a water hazard, which effectively sealed Ripper’s victory. Despite not having captain Jon Rahm due to illness, Iron Heads managed to upset higher-ranked teams in the earlier rounds but ultimately finished last in the championship.
