Caleb Ewan Sprints to Victory in Stage Two of Tour of the Basque Country

Posted : 09 April 2025

Caleb Ewan surged to victory in stage two of the Tour of the Basque Country on Tuesday, using his sprinting prowess to dominate the final dash to the line in Lodosa. The stage, which began with a flat route from Pamplona, ended in a high-speed sprint, where Ewan, known for his explosive power despite his smaller frame, clocked around 70kph in the final stretch.

The 30-year-old, who joined Ineos over the winter, credited his team for positioning him perfectly heading into the final bend, allowing him to claim his second win of the season.

Despite Ewan’s win on the day, Soudal-Quick Step’s Maximilian Schachmann maintained his grip on the overall race lead. He remains ahead of UAE Team Emirates’ Joao Almeida and Red Bull’s Florian Lipowitz in the general classification.

The peloton caught a breakaway group just before entering Lodosa, but the chase took a toll on Visma’s Victor Campenaerts, who crashed heavily and was seen in significant pain at the roadside. The crash reignited concerns following last year’s edition of the race, where a dangerous downhill section led to a serious accident involving Jonas Vingegaard.

Looking ahead, the race will shift dramatically in terrain, with four challenging stages to come. Stage three, taking riders from Zarautz to Besain, features seven climbs across 153 kilometers, including a final ascent with a punishing 16.5% gradient.

Schachmann acknowledged the importance of the next stage, calling it a key moment in the fight for the overall title as the race heads into the mountains.
