Byeong Hun An leads Genesis Scottish Open, secures final Open Championship spot

Posted : 14 July 2023
Byeong Hun An took the lead at the Genesis Scottish Open with an impressive 9-under 61 in the first round, giving him a two-shot advantage over Davis Riley. This tournament serves as the final opportunity for players to earn a spot in The Open Championship at Royal Liverpool next week, with the top three players not already exempt securing their places.

Rory McIlroy returned from a two-week break and posted a solid 64, including an eagle and six birdies, to tie with Thomas Detry. McIlroy was satisfied with his start and expressed his contentment with the round.

Davis Riley played in the afternoon when the wind picked up, and he showcased his ability to navigate the challenging conditions with crucial par saves and seven birdies. Riley is already looking forward to his Open Championship debut and enjoys the unique style of links golf, which he experienced during his Junior Ryder Cup participation in Scotland.

The Renaissance Club, although not a true links course, offers a similar playing style and challenges as links courses. Collin Morikawa credited his experience at The Renaissance Club for helping him win The Open in 2021, and Riley also found the course enjoyable and suited to his game.

Other notable performances include Max Homa and Tom Kim at 66, Rickie Fowler at 67 in his first start since winning in Detroit, and Justin Thomas, who switched to a cross-handed putting grip and carded a 68.

Defending champion Xander Schauffele shot even-par 70 and will need to improve in the second round to make the cut, while Patrick Cantlay and Jordan Spieth both posted 72.
