Buhai Leads the Pack at Kroger Queen City Championship

Posted : 20 September 2024

Ashleigh Buhai of South Africa took charge in the first round of the Kroger Queen City Championship, posting an impressive 7-under-par 65 at TPC River's Bend in Maineville, Ohio. Buhai's round featured eight birdies, granting her a one-shot advantage heading into Friday's play. Close behind are Jeeno Thitikul of Thailand and Yan Liu of China, both finishing at 6-under 66.

A group of players tied at 5-under 67 includes notable names such as World No. 1 Nelly Korda, Olympic gold medalist Lydia Ko of New Zealand, and Leona Maguire from Ireland. Other competitors in this tie are Savannah Grewal of Canada, Jasmine Suwannapura of Thailand, Peiyun Chien of Taiwan, Polly Mack of Germany, and Angel Yin. All eyes, however, are on Buhai, who has a total of 22 professional wins, primarily in her home country.

Buhai attributed her successful round to strong ball striking and smart decision-making. "I hit it great and putted well," she noted. She mentioned the importance of attacking the right holes while being cautious with tricky pin placements, especially as the greens firmed up throughout the day. After a birdie on the par-3 16th, she recorded a bogey on the next hole but quickly regained momentum with another birdie on the par-5 18th.

Thitikul, a former World No. 1, is looking for her first individual LPGA win in two years but displayed a relaxed mindset during her round. Playing alongside Korda, who maintained a bogey-free performance and hit all 14 fairways, Thitikul credited her calm approach for her success. Ko also had a solid round, remaining bogey-free and reflecting on her recent triumphs, including the Women's Open. Defending champion Minjee Lee started her campaign with a 1-under 71.
