Bryson DeChambeau powers into lead at LIV Golf Mexico

Posted : 26 April 2025

Bryson DeChambeau made a statement at LIV Golf Mexico City on Friday, firing an impressive 8-under 63 to seize a one-stroke advantage over major champions Cameron Smith and Jon Rahm. His fast start put him atop the leaderboard at Club De Golf Chapultepec.

DeChambeau quickly set the tone by eagling the short par-4 second hole, and after three holes, he was already 4 under. Despite a lone bogey blemish, he closed his round strong with a stretch of birdie-birdie-par-birdie to cap an outstanding day.

With Mexico City's high altitude giving drives extra distance, DeChambeau averaged a staggering 370 yards off the tee, including three bombs measuring over 400 yards. "Yeah, 370 sounds about right," DeChambeau said. "I was seeing it fly that far on the range. If the fairways firm up, it could be even longer."

On the team front, DeChambeau’s Crushers GC matched Ripper GC, captained by Smith, with both squads posting a 15-under total to share the top spot. Smith put together a strong round himself, racking up nine birdies against two bogeys. "It was important to trust myself today," Smith said, admitting that keeping the ball in play off the tee has been a recent challenge.

Jon Rahm, sitting third in the season’s points standings, is still looking for his first LIV Golf victory since his triumph in Chicago last year. Rahm delivered a similar card to Smith’s — nine birdies and two bogeys — and nearly aced the par-3 18th, tapping in for birdie after the ball rolled just past the cup.

Rahm reflected positively on his strong start, opening his round with three consecutive birdies. "There’s no better way to start a round," he said. "That early momentum really settled me, and I felt at ease on the greens all day. I couldn't have asked for a better opening."

Bubba Watson finished the day alone in fourth with a 5-under 66, while England’s Tyrrell Hatton sits in fifth after shooting a 4-under 67.
