Bryson DeChambeau breaks PGA Tour record with 12-under-par 58 at LIV Golf Greenbrier

Posted : 07 August 2023
Bryson DeChambeau delivered an astonishing performance in the history of golf on Sunday, carding a 58 to secure victory at the LIV Golf Greenbrier title.

The 2020 US Open champion crafted an incredible round with 13 birdies and just one bogey, achieving a remarkable 12-under-par score to finish at 23 under for the 54-hole tournament held in West Virginia.

This score matches the record for the lowest round on the PGA Tour, a feat previously accomplished by Jim Furyk in 2016 at TPC River Highlands in Connecticut.

Describing the achievement as "probably the greatest moment in my golfing career," DeChambeau expressed his overwhelming satisfaction.

His remarkable feat marks the lowest round ever recorded in the LIV series, which was introduced in 2021.

DeChambeau humbly stated, "It's difficult to put into words. I've dedicated a lot of hard work over an extended period, and I always believed that something special would come to fruition eventually. I just didn't anticipate when."

Throughout the history of professional golf, only a handful of rounds of 58 have been documented at the highest level. Notable instances include two occurrences on the Japan Tour by Ryo Ishikawa in 2010 at The Crowns and Kim Seong-hyeon in 2021 at the Golf Partner Pro-Am.

German golfer Stephan Jager achieved a 58 on the Web.com Tour in California in 2016, while Spain's Alejandro del Rey accomplished the same feat on the European Challenge Tour in Switzerland in 2021.

Several 58s have also been posted on developmental tours, and Irish golfer David Carey achieved an exceptional 57 at the Cervino Open on the Alps Tour, a third-tier circuit.

Although there have been 11 rounds of 59 on the PGA Tour, Annika Sorenstam of Sweden holds the sole 59 on the LPGA Tour, and Oliver Fisher from England stands as the single golfer to have achieved a 59 on the European Tour.

The 29-year-old American golfer, DeChambeau, secured a comfortable six-shot victory over Chile's Mito Pereira, who finished with a closing round of 63.

The Old White course, the venue for this week's tournament, previously witnessed an incredible 59 by Australian golfer Stuart Appleby during a PGA Tour event in 2010.

DeChambeau's late surge included birdies on 22 of his last 34 holes, marking his first triumph since the 2021 Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill.

This victory held deeper significance for DeChambeau, as it was his first win since his father, Jon, passed away in November 2020 at the age of 63 following a prolonged battle with kidney disease.

Acknowledging his father's presence during the victory, DeChambeau said, "He was with me out there all day today, no doubt. It's been a challenging couple of years, but achieving it in this manner and closing with a 58... it's truly remarkable what I was able to accomplish. I'm incredibly thrilled."
