Bernhard Langer, at 67 years old, made an incredible birdie on the final hole to win the Charles Schwab Cup Championship, extending his record of winning a title every year on the PGA Tour Champions circuit to 18 consecutive years. Langer's five-under-par 66 on the final day gave him an 18-under total, securing a one-stroke victory over defending champion Steven Alker and Richard Green. This win marked Langer's 47th title on the over-50s circuit and his first since recovering from an Achilles tendon injury earlier in 2024.
After starting strong with rounds of 69, 64, and 67 at Phoenix Country Club in Arizona, Langer held a five-shot lead heading into the back nine. However, back-to-back bogeys on the 10th and 11th holes, followed by another on the 17th, allowed Alker to catch up, and the two were tied going into the final hole. Despite a challenging drive into the trees on the par-five 18th, Langer sunk a clutch birdie putt to seal the victory, while Alker could only manage a par.
While Alker finished tied for second, his performance was enough to secure the Charles Schwab Cup points race for the season. Alker reflected on the bittersweet result, acknowledging the importance of the Schwab Cup despite falling short of the victory. "It would have been nice to win it all, the whole lot, but I've got the Schwab Cup and that's important to me," Alker said.
