Ben Woollaston expressed optimism about overcoming his recent health issues after securing a place in the last 32 of the inaugural Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters with a hard-fought 5-3 victory over Iranian number one Hossein Vafaei. Woollaston, who has been battling Chronic Fatigue Syndrome since 2021, has struggled with his daily life and practice routines. However, he has recently increased his practice intensity, and this seems to be paying off as he has also achieved wins against Oliver Lines and Joe Perry this week.
In his match against Vafaei, Woollaston faced early setbacks as Vafaei took the first two frames with breaks of 75 and 61. Woollaston then responded with impressive breaks of 71, 133, and 57 to win three consecutive frames and take a 3-2 lead. Although Vafaei equalized by winning the sixth frame, Woollaston clinched the last two frames to secure his victory and set up a clash with Zhang Anda in the next round.
Woollaston, reflecting on his performance, acknowledged Vafaei's status as a top player and praised the tournament's organization. He noted that practicing more frequently has improved his game and that his health issues are becoming more manageable. Woollaston described the Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters as one of the best overseas events he has attended, complimenting the quality of the tables and the overall experience.
In other matches, Thepchaiya Un-Nooh narrowly avoided setting an unwanted record by coming from behind to defeat Chris Wakelin 5-4. Despite an early break of 78, Un-Nooh faced a 4-2 deficit but rallied to win the next three frames and advance to face Mark Williams. Jimmy Robertson delivered a dominant 5-0 win over Rory Thor and will compete against John Higgins, while Si Jiahui defeated Graeme Dott 5-0 with breaks of 102, 75, and 82 and will play Tom Ford. Stuart Bingham overcame Anthony Hamilton 5-3 to set up a match against Ding Junhui, and Lei Peifan's 5-2 win over Joe O'Connor will see him face Ronnie O'Sullivan.
