Beau Hossler's performance on the back nine during Sunday's morning session at the 3M Open has set the stage for an intriguing final round.
Starting from the 9th hole, Hossler went on a remarkable run of eight consecutive birdies, matching the course-record 62 and finishing the tournament at 13 under. Although he made par on the 17th and 18th holes, shooting an impressive 29 on the back nine, he still trailed Lee Hodges by seven shots as he concluded his round.
Reflecting on his incredible run, Hossler expressed his delight, stating that he had been waiting for this breakthrough all week. Despite shooting so low on Sunday, he acknowledged that he had little chance of winning the tournament, making it a unique experience. Nonetheless, he was thrilled to achieve such a remarkable score.
While a win or a top 10 finish might be challenging, Hossler's performance will earn him crucial FedExCup points. Ranked 62nd in the FedExCup before the tournament, his top-15 finish is projected to keep him around the same position, providing him with some breathing room ahead of the upcoming Wyndham Championship.
His string of eight consecutive birdies fell just one short of the PGA TOUR record set by Mark Calcavecchia in 2009 and matched by Kevin Chappell in 2020. Although he was focused on each shot and unaware of his opportunity to break the record, Hossler displayed exceptional approach play and sank some crucial putts during his impressive streak.
Despite the challenging course conditions, Hossler expects low scores to continue throughout the day. With the wind not being much of a factor and the greens in great condition, he believes that more low scores will be seen, making the final round of the tournament highly competitive.
