Battle for pool supremacy: Wales aims to secure top spot against Georgia in Rugby World Cup
Posted : 06 October 2023
Wales is on the verge of winning their World Cup pool in consecutive tournaments, facing Georgia in their final group game in Nantes. They need just one point to secure the top spot in Pool C after a resounding victory over Australia. In contrast, Georgia has struggled in this competition, failing to secure a win with losses to Fiji and Australia and a draw against Portugal.
Wales, however, remembers the pain Georgia inflicted on them almost a year ago when they suffered a shocking 13-12 defeat at home. While only four starting players remain from that match, the current squad is well aware of Georgia's capabilities.
This World Cup brings back memories of Wales' infamous group exit in 2007 at Nantes when they were knocked out by Fiji. Fortunately, World Cup elimination is not a concern this time, but Wales remains vigilant to avoid surprises as Georgia aims to play the spoiler.
Warren Gatland has made six changes to the starting lineup, with Hooker Dewi Lake leading the team in place of the rested co-captain Jac Morgan. Gareth Anscombe takes the role of outside-half, and several other changes have been made in the lineup.
On the Georgian side, Captain Merab Sharikadze returns from injury, and they have made five changes in total, including bringing in Full-back Lasha Khmaladze for his first appearance in this World Cup. Georgia's goal is to repeat their previous victory over Wales, and they have the kicker Luka Matkava, who played a pivotal role in their previous win with a winning penalty kick from 45 meters.
