Barracuda Championship: Noh leads with 23 points using modified Stableford scoring system

In the first round of the Barracuda Championship at Tahoe Mountain Club, S.Y. Noh took the lead with an impressive performance, scoring 23 points with three eagles on the par-5 holes. The tournament, co-sanctioned by the DP World Tour and the PGA Tour, uses the Modified Stableford scoring system, where eagles are awarded five points and birdies two, while bogeys deduct one point and double bogeys three.
Noh, a 32-year-old South Korean player, also had five birdies and two bogeys on the par-71 Old Greenwood layout. He is no stranger to success on the PGA Tour, having secured his lone title at the 2014 Zurich Classic of New Orleans.
Reflecting on his remarkable performance, Noh expressed his delight, stating, "It’s first time ever to make three eagles. It’s just so much fun to play today." His impressive play gave him a lot of confidence heading into the tournament.
Behind Noh, Beau Hossler secured the second spot with 17 points, highlighted by a hole-in-one on the par-3 third and an eagle on the par-5 sixth on his final nine. He explained, "I was kind of in between clubs, I think it was like 211 (yards), but at altitude it’s playing like 190. I hit 7-iron and it landed in a good spot and it went in."
Ryan Gerard and Frenchman Alexander Levy were tied for third with 16 points. Levy impressed with eight birdies in a bogey-free round and praised the unique format, saying, "It’s a different format, but it’s nice to play like this sometimes. You just focus on hitting good shots and see what happens."
Carson Young, Patrick Rodgers, and Maximilian Kieffer each scored 15 points, closely trailing the leaders. Vincent Norrman, the TOUR rookie from Sweden, who recently won the Barbasol Championship in a playoff, scored 11 points.
Defending champion Chez Reavie earned seven points, while Geoff Ogilvy opened with a six-point round. Ogilvy's last professional victory came in 2014 when he won the Barracuda Championship.
