Barracuda Championship: Akshay Bhatia wins first PGA TOUR title, playoff victory

Posted : 24 July 2023
Akshay Bhatia secured his first PGA TOUR title at the Barracuda Championship in a thrilling sudden-death playoff against Patrick Rodgers. The 21-year-old Bhatia, who turned pro at 17, earned full status on TOUR and a spot in the FedExCup Playoffs after playing under special temporary membership since his runner-up finish at the Puerto Rico Open in March.

Bhatia's final round was impressive, converting a birdie on the 18th hole to finish with 40 points under the modified Stableford scoring system. The system awards five points for an eagle, two for a birdie, deducts a point for a bogey, and three for a double bogey. He had nine points on Sunday, tying Rodgers, who scored six points in the final round.

In the sudden-death playoff, Rodgers encountered bad luck as his tee shot settled into a divot, leading to a chunked approach. On the other hand, Bhatia's birdie putt fell just short, but he secured victory with a tap-in.

Bhatia's journey to this victory was a tough one, with ups and downs throughout his career. He expressed his excitement about earning special temporary membership, allowing him to participate in major events like THE PLAYERS Championship and PGA Championship.

Previously, Bhatia won in the Bahamas on the Korn Ferry Tour in early 2022 but fell short of obtaining a PGA TOUR card. However, with this victory, he is now eligible for some of the most prestigious events in golf.

Patrick Rodgers, on the other hand, remains winless in 246 PGA TOUR starts and missed another opportunity to convert a 54-hole lead.

The tournament was co-sanctioned by the DP World Tour, and two players from that circuit, Julien Guerrier and Jens Dantorp, tied for third place with 37 points. Ryan Gerard, also a special temporary member, secured fifth place with 36 points, despite totaling just six points in the final two rounds.
