Bai Yulu Nears Historic Last-32 Spot at UK Championship

Posted : 20 November 2024

Bai Yulu is on the verge of making history as the first woman to reach the last-32 stage of the UK Championship, following an impressive third consecutive victory in the qualifiers. The 21-year-old from China showcased remarkable resilience, winning the final three frames to edge out world number 44 Scott Donaldson in a thrilling 6-5 encounter. This achievement marks her as the first woman to claim three wins at a ranking event, a testament to her growing stature in the sport.

Earlier this year, Bai clinched the Women's World Championship and has carried that momentum into her debut season on the professional tour. Ranked 120th globally, she had already achieved a milestone by becoming the first woman this century to secure back-to-back wins in a ranking event, defeating Jamie Jones and Farakh Ajaib in earlier rounds. Her performances this week have been particularly notable as she had not previously recorded a main tour victory.

In the final qualifying round, Bai is set to face England’s world number 21, Jack Lisowski, on Wednesday evening. A win would secure her a spot in the main draw in York, where the last-32 matches begin on Saturday, November 23. The tournament will feature the top 16 seeds drawn against 16 qualifiers, with Ronnie O’Sullivan defending his title as the eight-time champion.

Bai’s historic journey is a significant moment for women in snooker, with her success inspiring greater representation in the sport. Her breakthrough this season underscores her potential as a trailblazer, with her eyes now firmly set on advancing further in one of the sport's most prestigious tournaments.
