Japan's Ayaka Furue celebrated her first major victory on the women’s golf tour at the Evian Championship, clinching the title with a stunning eagle putt on the final hole. The 24-year-old had shown strong form throughout the tournament, leading at the halfway point before entering the final round two shots behind Australia’s Stephanie Kyriacou. With an impressive closing round of 65, Furue finished with a total of 19 under par, achieving a significant milestone in her career as she triumphed in the fourth of five majors.
Furue shared her inspiration for success, citing her newfound love for Star Wars. "I became a Star Wars fan like a month ago, and I love the phrase 'May the force be with you,'" she said. This mantra resonated with her during the crucial moments of the final round, especially on the 15th hole, where it motivated her to stay focused. Her performance ultimately secured her the victory, making her Japan's third women's major champion, following in the footsteps of Hinako Shibuno and Hisako Higuchi.
Finishing just one shot behind, Kyriacou expressed her mixed emotions about her performance. While she was pleased with her overall play during the week, the disappointment of not winning weighed heavily on her. “It was a good week. Sucks not to hold the trophy,” she reflected, acknowledging that she would have been content with a second-place finish at the start of the tournament. Thailand's Patty Tavatanakit rounded out the top three, finishing in third place and one shot further back.
American Lauren Coughlan and Korean Ryu Hae-ran completed the top five, each two shots behind Tavatanakit. Coughlan held the lead for much of the day and expressed satisfaction with her performance despite the way the tournament concluded. “I held the lead of a major for almost 15 holes today, so I can be very happy about it,” she stated, even as she felt a tinge of disappointment about her final outcome. Furue’s triumph at Evian marks a significant chapter in her career and adds another layer to Japan's growing presence in women's golf.
