Australia triumphs in high-scoring thriller against New Zealand, extending World Cup winning streak

Posted : 28 October 2023
Australia displayed their resilience as they triumphed over a determined New Zealand side, extending their winning streak to four games in a thrilling high-scoring encounter in Dharamsala.

In a World Cup match that witnessed a record chase of 389, the Black Caps found themselves needing 19 runs from the final over to achieve an extraordinary victory. However, their hopes were dashed when James Neesham was run out for 58 on the second-to-last ball, and the final delivery proved too much for last man Lockie Ferguson, who couldn't manage the required six.

Ultimately, New Zealand concluded their innings at 383-9, with Rachin Ravindra's brilliant 116 leading the way. The combined total of 771 runs made this contest the highest-scoring World Cup game in history.

Australia owed their imposing total of 388 to Travis Head's aggressive 109 off 67 balls, a performance that set the tone during an opening partnership of 175 runs in just 19.1 overs with David Warner. However, New Zealand's usually reliable bowlers, Matt Henry and Trent Boult, struggled to contain the onslaught as Warner and Head blazed their way to a formidable 118-0 within the first 10 overs, setting an Australian ODI record.

Despite an uncharacteristically sloppy fielding display by New Zealand, which included dropping four catches, including Head on 70 and 75, part-time spinner Glenn Phillips emerged with the most respectable bowling figures, taking 3-37. Australia's total, filled with 20 sixes, was daunting.

Australia, after recovering from two initial defeats in the tournament, now position themselves favorably for a spot in the semi-finals. New Zealand, despite their strong start with four wins, can take solace in the fact that their hopes remain intact.
