Australia moved closer to claiming their seventh Women's T20 World Cup title with a commanding 60-run victory over New Zealand in their Group A clash held in Sharjah on Tuesday. After setting a tournament-high score of 148 for eight, the Australian bowlers effectively restricted the New Zealand team, who were all out for just 88 runs in 19.2 overs.
Beth Mooney led the Australian batting with a top score of 40, while quick bowler Megan Schutt was the standout performer with the ball, earning the Player of the Match award for her impressive figures of 3-3 in 3.2 overs.
Australian captain Alyssa Healy praised her team’s bowling performance, stating, “We could have been smarter with the bat at the end, but we came out really well with the ball, and I’m really happy with that.” She also acknowledged the contributions of the entire bowling attack, not just Schutt.
Australia’s victory solidifies their position at the top of Group A, while New Zealand slips to third place, trailing Pakistan but still ahead of India on net run rate. After winning the toss, Healy’s aggressive start, scoring 26 runs off 20 balls, set the tone for the innings. Despite a shaky middle order, Australia managed to post a formidable target for their opponents.
New Zealand, who previously secured a win against India, struggled from the outset. Following the dismissal of Amelia Kerr for 29 runs, the team collapsed, losing nine wickets for just 29 runs. Annabel Sutherland supported Schutt by taking 3-21, contributing to New Zealand's difficulties.
Kiwi captain Sophie Devine reflected on her team's performance, noting the need for a better start as they look to improve in their remaining matches. Australia is set to face Pakistan in Dubai on Sunday, while New Zealand will take on Sri Lanka in Sharjah on Saturday.
